There will be concerts by military bands on Friday night, the Federal City Brass Band on Saturday night which will add to the musical favor of the event as well as fife and drum music and the sounds of bugles. Buglers will participate in skirmish drills with troops, sound all the camp calls over the weekend, perform in two concerts in the Rose Garden, be part of the dress parades including a review by President Lincoln (who will be accorded proper honors on the drums and bugles), and be part of the official 150th anniversary sounding of the call on Saturday evening June 23. The focal point of the weekend will be the re-dedication of the Taps 150 monument on Saturday June 23 at 1100. The monument, originally erected in 1969, will be formally re-dedicated in ceremonies on the grounds. Plus top Civil War buglers will be on hand to give workshops on CW performance practices and brass techniques.

DOUG GRUNN

Doug Grunn

Doug has been a lifelong resident of the Garden State. Perhaps it was due to his father taking him to many Drum & Bugle Corps competitions as a youngster or because his grandfather played cornet for John Philip Sousa, Doug always had a penchant for playing brass instruments in marching organizations.

Doug has been involved in various competitive drum and bugle corps for over twenty years. He played lead soprano in 4 different junior corps in New Jersey followed by 5 years as a member of the Long Island Sunrisers, where he participated in 2 of that corps 6 World Championship titles.

In 1995, Doug became a Civil War reenactor, joining Company G, 33rd NJ Zouaves as a private. He was later elected corporal, then sergeant and served as that organization’s President for  4 years.

After several years, Doug returned to the rank of private but wanted to take his Civil War experience in a different direction. Speaking to other buglers in the hobby, notably George Rabbai, Jari Villanueva, and Alex Garbeck, Doug decided to take the plunge and purchased a used clairon.

In 2004, Doug was elected to the positions of Principal Musician and Chief Bugler of the Mifflin Guard – positions he still holds today. He sounds bugle calls for the Mifflin Guard at events and oversees the Mifflin Guard Field Music;  also holding the position of the Drum Major for the Mifflin Guard Regimental Brass Band.

In addition to his Civil War activities, Doug is a trustee with the Warren County, NJ War Memorial Committee, serving as ceremonial bugler and captain of the group’s “Historical Color Guard” and has been a member of Bugles Across America since its inception.

FRANK DORRITIE

Frank Dorritie

Frank Dorritie is a bugler with Co. G, 20th Maine Volunteer Infantry, ACWA in California. He began playing calls in the Cub Scouts in the ‘50s, and continued in competitive drum corps winning several individual regional and national championships, including those of the Northeastern Circuit and Drum Corps Associates.

Frank is a member of the World Drum Corps Hall of Fame, the Buglers Hall of Fame and Bugles Across America. His audio production work includes 9 Grammy Nominations and 2 Grammy Awards, and he chairs the Recording Arts Department at Los Medanos College. He has been busy as a Civil War re-enactor bugler on the West Coast. At the 2011 National Civil War Field Music School, Frank served as an adjunct instructor.

All Civil War Buglers who wish to camp over the weekend at Berkeley must register as a re-enactor. We will set up a special company street for musicians. If you wish to come for part of the weekend, that’s OK too, just pay admission into Berkeley Plantation.
